Katikati Safari Camp

At the end of the day we tough it out under canvas in a safari  camp.  The tents are very well made with steel frames, heavy duty canvas, full vinyl floor and have a separate flush toilet and shower.  There are half a dozen solar powered LED lights with a battery under the vanity.

When we order a shower the man brings 20L of warm water which he hoists up a pole for our gravity fed shower.  Before dinner we sit around the 'bush television' with cold beer talking to other tourists.

After dinner we have to be escorted back to our tent in the dark and are not allowed to leave the tent until daylight.  There's a whistle in the tent in case of emergency and we are told water buffalo standing at the door of the tent is not an emergency.

Serengetti - North

After another night in a safari camp under canvas we set out again on the maze of largely unsignposted tracks and trails that cover the Serengetti. We went along beside the Mara River but had missed the wilderbeast migration. The aftermath of the migration were the hundreds of wilderbeast carcasses littering the rocks with many large birds feeding on the remains. Stone Town

The old part of Zanzibar is known as Stone Town.  Zanzibar was under control of the Sultan of Oman in the 18th and for much of the 19th centuries and Stone Town was the centre of the East African slave trade. We wound our way through a maze of narrow alleys, past vendors of all types while dodging vespers and bicycles.   Chicken with flies Technicolour Pasta Beans and Things Love the cabling The PVC water supply pipes are strung along the alleyways The House of Wonders is falling apart like much of the city.
